The Bachelor

This week I was watching the Bachelor, and in one of the dates Amanda and Ben went up in a hot air balloon. This made me think of our lecture on areil reconnaissance. It is interesting to see how something that was initially used for data collection and observation during war is now a romantic setting for a date on reality television. However, one thing that remains the same is the awe and sublime feelings that Amanda and Ben felt looking down at the terrain from this unique planemetric viewpoint.

  1. It's interesting, as you presented, how hot air balloons were once used for war and are now used as a fun activity. I wonder how this transition came to be and how long it took for individuals to decide that an object that was used to protect the country was then going to be used to take people up as a romantic activity. But I guess in both the past and present, the use of hot air balloons have been used to explore the land, just for different purposes and with different mindsets.

  2. That's interesting and funny how you thought about that, my friends and I brought that up as well as we were watching the Bachelor during that episode. From the view in the balloon as shown in the show, I definitely understood the feelings of awe and freedom we discussed in class. It definitely is interesting to think about how hot air balloons were thought of as breakthrough amazing technology at the time of its creation, and were talked about in terms of aerial reconnaissance for warfare. But in modern times it could be seen as a romantic date.
