Kaitlyn Kassis- Discussion 2/9

1.
#1) The process of creating Google maps was a long and strenuous task. Google hired individuals to drive around with cameras attached to the roof of the vehicles in order to capture real life, 3 dimensional images of the area they were mapping. To date, Google maps is the most advanced, realistic depiction of the world as far as maps go. Google maps have revolutionized the conventional map and the way we view the world today.

#2) Google Map’s success in part lies in the fact that its debut coincided with the release of the first generation iPhone. Google Maps essentially won the map-making “war,” and has dominated the field ever since. When Apple attempted to create their own mapping service they soon realized that the task at hand was much larger than anticipated. They even had to apologize to customers for their faulty application.

#3) This article discusses the newest emerging features that Google Maps provides. It allows users to view famous landmarks and destinations around the globe in an incredible realistic manner. As time progresses, Google’s mapping technology continues to become more interactive.

2. It really intrigues me how Google’s technology has progressed so rapidly over the past decade or so. It is very interesting to see the progression from provided maps for simple directions from point A to point B, to now offering interactive technology that allows users to see varies places around the globe in real-time. Google Maps has evolved to become more than just a utility. The exponential growth in mapping technology makes me wonder what is going to come next.

3. I watched the video on You Tube about the Sulfur Mines. It is mind blowing how realistic the imagery is. It is as if I was actually there! I am curious to see what other locations Google has logged in this same manner. It is as if you can travel the world through your computer screen.
