Everything Happens for a Reason
I am a firm believer that everything happens for a reason. We have discussed in class the rise of air power during the first word war and how important this was for mapping. This rise allowed for the advancement and use of cartography an photography through the use of aviation. This may have not been possible if not for the war. Aviation is one of the most important aspects when it comes to map making. Of course wars are not a positive thing and we wish to avoid them at all costs. But perhaps the advancement of air power and mapping are hindered if not for the war. It shouldn't have to cost lives and should be advanced through peaceful means but without these advancements, maps may be very different today.

I think it's definitely true that mapping and aviation are so advanced today mostly because they're vital technologies used in warfare, especially when views from the air were first being introduced. Sadly, it seems like there's almost always a link to the development of new kinds of technology and the funding of the military industrial complex, especially since defense spending is so disproportionately large in America versus other countries. I wonder what mapping and aviation might look like today if we never used them for warfare...maybe we'd still be using passenger-carrying zeppelins or something.
